Section 6 – Adding Nodes
This section takes you step by step through adding nodes (devices) to your Mutiny system.
6.1 Default Discovery Settings
Before discovering nodes, configure the default settings Mutiny will use during discovery (community strings, polling defaults, and reset behaviour).
6.1.1 Click Nodes => Manager

This panel displays a list of SNMP Community Strings that Mutiny can apply to nodes during discovery.

If you use more than one community string across your estate, list them here. There is no fixed limit, but adding a large number will slow discovery.
Community strings are case-sensitive.
The community string public is commonly used as a default on printers and some managed switches.
Default Community for Ping-Only Nodes
Use this drop-down to select the community string to apply when Mutiny adds a node that does not (initially) respond to SNMP.
This community string is also used as the default in the Test Node panel.

This section defines the default polling template applied to newly added nodes.
Node Polling – Enables or disables all polling for the node.
Ping Polling – Enables or disables ICMP (“ping”) polling.
SNMP Polling – Defines when SNMP polling is performed.
SNMP Agent – Selects which SNMP agent profile to use.
Port Number – The UDP port used for SNMP (typically 161).
Community String – Read-only “password” used to access SNMP data.
Retries – Maximum SNMP retries before the SNMP agent is considered down.
System Polling – Defines when host/system (SIG) SNMP polling is performed.
Port Number – UDP port for SIG SNMP polling (typically 161).
Community String – Community string used for SIG SNMP polling.
Retries – Maximum retries before system properties are set to “Unknown”.
Node Event Alerts – Enables or disables alert actions when an event occurs.

This section defines the behaviour of Reset Polling (either the 
Reset Polling re-reads a node’s SNMP information and (optionally) resets some or all monitoring defaults back to their template values. It is also used to enable new monitoring features introduced in newer Mutiny versions. For this reason, after upgrading Mutiny, it is often useful to run Update Nodes with Reset Polling enabled.
However, you may not want to overwrite existing tuning (especially Warning/Critical thresholds). These options allow you to control exactly what gets reset:
Node Name
SysName – set the node name from SNMP sysName.
IP Address – set the node name from the IP address.
Off (recommended) – leave the node name unchanged.
Node Icon
On – set the node icon to the default for the device type.
Only if Misc. (recommended) – set the default icon only if the current icon is “Miscellaneous”.
Off – leave the icon unchanged.
CPU Polling
On – reset CPU thresholds to defaults.
Off – leave thresholds unchanged.
Memory Polling
On – reset memory thresholds to defaults.
Off – leave thresholds unchanged.
Disks Polling
On – discover new disks and reset all disk thresholds to defaults.
Add New Only (recommended) – discover new disks and apply defaults only to new disks.
Off – leave disk monitoring unchanged.
Processes Polling
On – discover and add new processes to the monitored list.
Off – leave process monitoring unchanged.
Agents Polling
On – discover and add new agents to the monitored list.
Off – leave agent monitoring unchanged.
QoS Polling (supported Cisco routers only)
On – discover and add new QoS class maps.
Off – leave QoS monitoring unchanged.
ISDN Polling (supported Cisco routers only)
On – discover and add new ISDN DS1/DS0 interfaces.
Off – leave ISDN monitoring unchanged.
Properties
On (recommended) – rewrite the node properties shown in the Properties panel (OS type, node type, serial number, etc.).
Off – leave properties unchanged.
Adapters
On (recommended) – reset the SNMP adapters applied to the node.
Off – leave adapters unchanged.

6.2 Discovering Devices
With the addition of Active IPAM™, many users find it logical to configure IP ranges in Active IPAM™ first, then add key devices directly from the IPAM interface. See the IPAM setup guide for details.
There are several methods for adding nodes:
- Discover – scans a range of IP addresses and adds responding devices
- Add Node – adds a single device or a list of IP addresses
- Add Trace – uses traceroute to a target node and can add the discovered hops
Using a combination of these methods, you can quickly build both an inventory and a useful topology view of your network. During discovery, Mutiny will try the community strings configured in the Default Settings panel.
6.3 Adding a Device or List of Devices

If you right-click an existing node before choosing Add Node, the new node(s) will be added as children of that node.

Enter one or more IP addresses in the top field and start the discovery/add process.
The remaining fields are optional and provide the following functionality:
Node Label
Used as the label for a single node, or as a prefix for a list of nodes.
Discovery Type
Full SNMP – adds the address(es) and discovers available SNMP properties.
Ping Only – adds the address(es) without adding SNMP monitoring.
Additional Community Strings
Adds temporary, one-off community strings for this operation only (in addition to the defaults).
6.4 Discovering a Range of Addresses
6.4.1 Select the 

In Start IP Address, enter the first address in the range (for example: 192.168.100.1).
In End IP Address, enter the last address in the range (for example: 192.168.100.254).
6.4.2 Press 
During discovery you will see status messages as devices are found and added. When complete, the message “New nodes have been added” will appear.
6.4.3 Click 
Wait up to one minute for the view to refresh and display newly added nodes. You can also re-select Nodes => Manager to force a refresh.
Tip: You can also enter CIDR notation (for example /24 or /23) in the start address field to widen the scan.
6.5 Deleting Nodes
To remove nodes from monitoring, either right-click the node and select delete, or use the 
6.6 Adding Nodes to Custom Views
Once nodes have been added, you can organise them into custom views for convenience.
6.6.1 Select your custom view from the left-hand view list.
This opens the view.
6.6.2 Click 
6.6.3 Use Shift and Ctrl to select the nodes you want, then click 
Once added, selected nodes will be removed from the list.
6.6.4 Click 
You can now drag nodes into a more aesthetic layout within the view. When finished, click
