Section 3 – Physical Appliance Set Up

This section applies only to Mutiny systems supplied on dedicated physical hardware.

3.1 Unpacking

The packaging includes a UK power lead and a cross-over network cable for initial setup. Rack-mount rails are supplied; however, rack mounting screws (cage nuts) are not included.

3.2 Racking

The Mutiny appliance is rack-mountable and occupies 1U of rack space. Before racking the appliance, remove the protective polythene film from the top cover.

No clearance is required above or below the appliance, as cooling airflow is designed to run from front to back.

3.3 Power

The Mutiny appliance contains internal storage used for both system software and monitoring data. As with any critical server, it is strongly recommended that the appliance is connected to a UPS-protected power source.

Once powered on, the Mutiny appliance must be shut down cleanly either from the local console or via the web-based administration interface. Failure to shut down the system correctly may result in data loss and could require the appliance to be returned for repair.

3.4 Building Your Appliance

Mutiny appliances supplied directly by Mutiny are delivered with the Mutiny system image pre-installed.

If you are supplying your own hardware, or replacing a failed storage device, you will need to build the appliance using one of the Mutiny ISO build images available from the downloads area:

3.5 Network Connections

DO NOT CONNECT THE NETWORK PORTS TO YOUR PRODUCTION NETWORK AT THIS TIME.

The appliance ships with factory-default IP addresses configured on its network interfaces. Connecting it directly to a live network before reconfiguration may cause IP address conflicts.

<—> LAN 1 (Left port when viewed from the rear) — LEAVE UNCONNECTED

This is the Mutiny administration interface, known internally as ETH0.

Factory configuration:

  • 192.168.100.150/24 – Mutiny factory administration address (user configurable)
  • 172.17.77.77/24 – Mutiny maintenance address (factory set and not user changeable)

<—> LAN 2 (Right port when viewed from the rear) — CONNECTS TO YOUR NETWORK

This is the Mutiny monitoring interface, known internally as ETH1. This is the interface used for monitoring your network.

Factory configuration:

  • 192.168.110.150/24 – Mutiny factory monitoring address

This address must be changed (via the Mutiny console or web interface) to an IP address appropriate for your network before connecting to production.

3.6 Assigning the Mutiny Monitoring Address

After powering on the appliance, the console will display the current network configuration.

Once the monitoring interface has been correctly configured, proceed to Section 4 of the user manual:
