Section 2 - Glossary of Terms

2.1. Mutiny

The company and the product

2.2. Mutiny Unit - Mutiny Appliance - Mutiny Box - Mutiny System

All these terms refer to the piece of hardware you have been shipped and are about to install.

2.3. Mutiny licence - Node Licence

The refers to a code that controls the number of devices the Mutiny appliance will monitor. It is supplied in the form of an ASCII armoured text file or pgp encrypted clear text. Example;

2.4. Node(s)

This refers to the devices on your network you intend to monitor; you might call them servers, switches, machines, computers, desktops etc.

2.5. Node Icons

Nodes are represented by a collection of icons to aid in the recognition of its role.

Router. PC, Switch, Webcam, Server, Environmental Probe, Virtual Server.

2.6. SNMP

One of the protocols used by the Mutiny system to gather information from your devices.

2.7. Front end

The web based Graphical user interface (GUI) used to control the Mutiny system.

2.8. Back end

The applications and packages doing the monitoring work and providing the data for the front end.

2.9. Status

The Mutiny GUI uses colours and symbols to indicate the status of various monitored properties within nodes.
The status colours are as follows;

2.9.1. OK
All the monitored properties in this node are present or below threshold

2.9.2. Warning
One or more properties have passed the warning threshold

2.9.3. Acknowledged Warning
The warning state has been acknowledged by an admin for a pre-selected time.

2.9.4. Critical
One or more properties have passed the critical threshold

2.9.5. Acknowledged Critical
The critical state has been acknowledged by an admin for a pre-selected time.

2.9.6. Unknown
One or more properties cannot be retrieved

2.9.7. Not Polled
The node has been excluded from the polling group

2.9.8. Connectivity Ignored
This node is not responding on the network and has been marked ignored. Nodes can be automatically placed in the mode when a parent node is not responding. This mode of operation can be used on workstations and laptops etc. that are often switched off.

2.9.9. [ICON] Maintenance Mode
This node is in maintenance mode, its events and alerts are ignored until it has returned to normal operation.

2.10. Status Panel

Double clicking on a node icon will open the node's status panel.

2.11. Monitored Properties

The list of properties that Mutiny monitoring on each node is shown in the Node Status panel. The list of properties varies depending on the type of node and the data available.

The first shows the Status panel from a Windows server; The second shows the Status panel of a router. Note the shorter list of properties on the router.
Most of the properties in the Status panel are self explanatory; however the Agents group needs further explanation. Contained within this group are all properties that are derived from the node using SNMP, but do not fit into any of the groups above. For a Windows Server this may include the RAID controllers (HP and Dell hardware). For an environmental monitor it may include temperature and Humidity. For a HP printer it might be paper and toner status.

Also included in this group is data from Remote Agents which are described in the next section.

2.12. Remote Agents (Mutiny Apps)

Remote agents are small pieces of software that are installed on the server that is being monitored in order to obtain detailed information from a specific application.
