Mutiny Case Study - Tottenham Hotspur

White Hart Lane has been home to one of Britain’s greatest football clubs, Tottenham Hotspur, for over 100 hundred years.

Founded in 1882, Tottenham has evolved from a small provincial club into a successful, world-renowned football team.

As a Premiership Football Club in the 21st Century, Tottenham Hotspur’s remit today is to fulfil the role of being a centre of sporting excellence. The Club has its own retail and conference facilities that have to cater for an ever-growing membership and gates of over 36,000 fans.

In the last few years, as football has grown as a business, Tottenham Hotspur has had to develop its technological infrastructure in order to cope with the exceptional demands placed upon it.

As the two members of the IT team oversee 250 computers and 150 users, simplicity of IT products is one of the most important factors when upgrading and choosing software options.

THE RIGHT SYSTEM

Although initially the club wasn’t looking at a network monitoring facility, Philip Rose – Tottenham Hotspur IT & Database Manager, felt that Mutiny’s appliance approach would be an asset for monitoring the range of systems that the club had on board, and was impressed enough to want to use Mutiny for its existing infrastructure.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Tottenham Hotspur’s systems are critical, as is maintaining the integrity of the network as efficiently as possible.

When looking to integrate a networking monitoring solution, the IT team’s key criteria was:

1.  Simplicity of the product in monitoring and alerting for problems and faults
2.  Value

Philip feels that Mutiny’s success lies in the background of the equipment and its proven track record.

"I am confident in using an appliance approach to network monitoring; being a small team we don’t have time to devote to cumbersome software packages. Mutiny is unique in the Market place because of its simple appliance based approach."

WHAT DOES MUTINY MONITOR AT TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR?

Mutiny’s software provides a clear view on the state of the network and warns of potential problems or service failures. Critical monitoring is needed - particularly for email, network availability and other special applications.

Tottenham Hotspur’s IT infrastructure includes:

  • 13 Servers for email, databases, financial management etc
  • A variety of Printers and Copiers
  • Network Hardware in terms of switches and routers
  • Remote sites connected via WAN and VPNs

THE RESULTS

The IT Team has seen a marked improvement in their ability to manage their system and its applications.

Says Philip, "Using Mutiny means we are much more pro-active in dealing with network issues BEFORE major problems occur – a major benefit for an organisation such as ours."

BENEFITS

Resource Time - Mutiny’s remote diagnosis over their WAN avoids unnecessary travel – an important factor for Tottenham’s small, but highly efficient, IT team.

Simplicity for Philip Rose - Having a preconfigured system meant that Mutiny was easily integrated into the network. Appliance based Mutiny was fitted and operational in less than a day. The appliance’s straight forward approach to critical service monitoring meant that the Tottenham Hotspur IT team could ‘hit the ground running’ without the need for additional, expensive training.

Alerting - Mutiny’s alerting capability by use of SMS text or email when critical thresholds are reached, allows an IT team like Tottenham to be more proactive in developing further systems analysis.

24 Hour Monitoring - Round the clock monitoring and alerting for potential problems wherever they are on the system.

MUTINY COMMENT

Says, Dudley Moor Radford, Commercial Director Mutiny: "We know that businesses these days need a sophisticated working package that provides a systems solution – we feel that Mutiny provides a cost effective and cost efficient solution to critical service monitoring – without hidden and extra unnecessary costs."
